Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin stands for Russian dress code for men and women
Moscow, January 18, Interfax - Russians' manner of dressing needs to be put in order, head of the Synodal Department for Church and Society Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin believes.
"It is not bad that today companies, higher educational establishments and schools introduce dress codes. It will be nice to invent a Russian dress code (it won't be compulsory for strip bars and brothels)," Father Vsevolod writes in his response to an Internet open letter addressed to Patriarch Kirill signed by more than 700 people.
Its authors among other things cited Father Vsevolod's recent words which he said at a round table on inter-ethnic relations: "If she wears a mini-skirt she can provoke not only a man from the Caucasus, but a Russian man as well. If she is drunk, it is even more likely that she will provoke men. If she actively contacts people and then wonders that this contact ends in rape, she is not right at all."
As was noted in the address, the priest tried "to substitute public discussion on problems of violations against women with a discussion on their appearance." Its authors said that appearance "is a private matter" and any person "has a right on sexual inviolability regardless of his or her manner of dressing, round of relations and so on." They urged the Patriarch to condemn "discriminating and insulting statements against women made by the Church officials."
Meanwhile, Father Vsevolod pointed out that "in all times among all nations appearance has not been considered a private matter."
"How women behave in public places, in educational establishments, in working places is not their "private matter." [Come le donne si comportano nei luoghi pubblici, nelle scuole o nei luoghi di lavoro, non è un loro "affare privato"] By the way, it refers to men as well. A fellow dressed in shorts and T-shirt in a big city, sport trousers and slippers also doesn't deserve respect. Only regret, if he is homeless," the priest said in his response posted on Tuesday by Interfax-Religion.
He expressed an opinion that the time would come "when indecently dressed women or that fellow in sport trousers will be led out of decent places. Or people who respect themselves will leave such places."
"You thing it is a utopia? No, you will soon have to get used to it," the Russian Church official said.
He said he was glad that his suggestion to discuss appearance of Russian women and girls caused interest, but was surprised that authors of the petition decided that he justified sexual assaults and indecent molestations.
"I haven't even thought about it. There's no justification to such actions. And meanwhile the problem persists. Not for me, but rather for those who confuse city streets with striptease (or will start confusing again when the winter ends," Father Vsevolod stressed.
According to him, a woman "relatively dressed or make-upped like a clown that expects to get acquainted with men on the streets, in the tube or at the bar not only risks meeting a drunken idiot, but exactly won't find a partner in life who has some reason and self-respect. She can find a sober idiot, but does she really look for him?"
The priest noted that "in all times among all nations a woman was respected and chosen as a life partner if she was modest and men knew her a little bit more serious than during a meeting in the street or at a drinking establishment."
"Free and easy appearance and behavior is a direct road to unhappiness. To empty one-time "loves." To short-term marriages followed by "ratty" divorces. To broken destinies of children. To loneliness and madness. To life catastrophe," the priest warns.
