http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/mar/08/wolf-whistling-harassment-streetTitolo:
Wolf-whistling is just the start – harassment is not harmlessThere is no reason sexual harassment in the street should be any more permissible than racist language
............
any behaviour that stops you from feeling safe in public, even for a moment, is street harassment – that a "compliment", even if well-intended, is only a compliment if it feels good..............
Today's formal, albeit theoretical, recognition by David Cameron that all women have the right to live free from violence is obviously a great step forward.
However, the UK has had since last May to commit to signing the pledge to criminalise "verbal, non-verbal or physical" sexual harassment, one of the commitments in the Council of Europe's convention of violence against women.
Whilst not in disagreement with this, is there not a slight paradox between women wearing increasingly overtly sexual dress and men being required to suppress any reaction to such a spectacle?
As someone who has lived in Southern Italy for years I welcome this kind of legislation, even if it's not enforced, just talking about it might help men to think twice. Here in Italy it is a constant battle for women to walk down the street without being harrassed (and not by the dark handsome italian men you imagine, but usually the fat old men who seem to spend all day waiting for a woman to walk past just so they can say something.) Interestingly in Italy men don't use the wolf whistle to attract female attention but instead that kind of squeaking/kissing noise you use with a cat. Not only is it annoying, it is disrespectful and creates the idea that women are inferior, stupid and can be attracted by animalistic noises. I hope (in vain me thinks) that this discussion may make it's way to Italy so I can enjoy sunny days without being intimidated by uneducated idiotsAttendiamo il recepimento nella legge italiana, poi mi raccomando attenzione a non incrociare lo sguardo di qualche isterica con fantasie di persecuzione perchè potrebbe costare molto caro.
